It started as a simple premise: a photographer wanted to photograph a couple for an intimate boudoir session. She offered her services free and received messages from several couples wanting to participate. She selected a woman by the name of Melanie Varney. Melanie was happily married and had recently given birth to 3 children in 12 months. That’s right, a set of twins and a single child in a period of 12 months. In her note to the photographer Trina Cary, she mentioned that “Every Mom knows that it was worth the struggle for the end result. It wasn’t until a full year postpartum that I finally let go and started to celebrate the journey my body had been through.”
A feel good story, right? Not so fast. After the pictures were posted online, Melanie started to get hurtful and rude comments about her. It became so bad that she no longer wanted to participate because of the negativity. Here is what the photographer posted on her Facebook page:
“Just the other day I received some very sad news from the mother of this session saying she no longer wants to partake in interviews regarding the session because the negative comments have taken a toll on her and that she is not feeling healthy at the moment. This devastated me. This session was supposed to build her up not tear her down. After this session she was on top of the world, her husband too but now after the public has gotten ahold of it she is back to square one with her insecurities.
So I started going through some comments and reading what people had been saying and I was hurt. I hurt for Mel. I hurt for any other woman trying to regain her confidence and do something for herself. The gist of the comments were people who aren’t comfortable with their own bodies lashing out at her – funny it was always her never her husband. Everyone is entitled to their own view and opinion but there are many other constructive ways to voice that without being rude and hateful. This session was not about two people being vain this was about learning to love yourself again. There isn’t one person out there who doesn’t want a nice picture of themselves that makes them feel good when they look at it. Some people even went as far as calling her a slut or a hoe, shame on you!!! This woman has dedicated her life to her husband and her children. She is fighting personal insecurities and your best comment is to trash her?! It makes me physically sick reading comments like these. Words hurt, people! I feel sorry for the authors of these comments because they are the ones who need a session like this most but will never have the courage or strength to do one. They are the ones shrouded in jealousy and insecurities and choose to reply out of spite.”
After hearing about this story, the Got MILF team wanted to celebrate Melanie and the journey she has undertaken. If anyone deserves to be an honorary MILF it’s her.
As women, and as mothers in particular, we should be exercising kindness, understanding and shared strength. There is enough hate and negativity in the world. Motherhood is the most beautiful and challenging part of many women’s lives. We applaud Trina for her work in sho9wing that women are so much more than what society dictates they are allowed to be. We especially want Melanie to know that the sacrifices she has made by sharing a vulnerable side of herself is not lost on us. Melanie is brave and selfless. She has encouraged so many women to begin the process of loving and accepting themselves. We sincerely hope that Melanie comes out of this experience knowing that any negativity is purely a reflection on htose dishing it out and not at all how the majority of people feel. Thank you for inspiring us Melanie. You truly are a beautiful person.
